In my DV, I run a Q-Q plot and a histogram, it looks fine, but how can I ensure that it is not skewed. If I compute my z score, could the z score be negative or does it only have to be positive?

Negative z scores mean negatively skewed; positive means positive. Remember, however, that unless you are working with a very small sample size, you should check normality graphically because the tests are too conservative.
