Covariant & Indep

When covarying out pretest scores when looking at posttest scores, is independence of observation affected? Or does that only look at independence of observation between different participants?

Perhaps it will help you to think about this in terms of lines of data.

Your ability to predict the value on any line of data (i.e., the score for any participant) is not improved by knowing the score on any other line of data (i.e., the score for any other participant).

The observations for each person are independent.

The CV and the DV are not independent, but rather are required to be correlated. However, those scores are within a line of data (i.e., within a participant), and thus the assumption of independence of observations is still upheld.
