Sum of Squares
I understand how to compute the sum of squares, but what does that value tell us conceptually?

The total SS (the sum of all observations of the squared differences of each observation from the overall mean)serves to give you information on the dispersion (or variance) of your data points.
Thus, we use the total SS for ANOVA (which is basically the analysis of variance).

so this total SS is that SS between or SS within groups?

By total SS, I'm referring to the total sum (represented by the sigma sign) of all the possible squares [(Y-My)^2 ]
For computing the SS for between groups and for the error term, you can look at the equations in your slides for Week 2.

to further clarify, total SS equals the sum of SS between AND SS within groups.
