Question #8 on review

Some of us were confused re: the part of the question, "which is which in RM design?" Do random factors=participants and fixed factors=time?

We didn't quite get a clear answer from the review session.

The factor of participant is always a random factor in a repeated measures design. This is because you always want to be able to generalize beyond the specific people who participated in your study to other people as well.

Your within subjects factors (e.g., time in a design where the same people are measured at multiple time points, gender of spouse where couple is your unit of analysis) are treated as fixed effects.

Any between subjects factors (e.g., intervention group) that you may have are also treated as fixed effects.
